Youth Enrichment
As services were provided to the teen mothers, another population in need of intervention was identified - the sisters and brothers of these teen mothers. In 1991 Family Development began working with the sisters of the teen mothers through the Girls Club. Work with the boys was added in 1994 through the Male Image program. While sisters and brothers of teen mothers who have been served through Family Development are given priority, any youth ages 10-17 is able to be served. Referrals come from other social service agencies agencies, the Youth Court, and from the community at large. Each group meets twice a week.
The focus is on improving the young people's self esteem, decision making skills and goal planning so that they will make positive life choices. Science- based alcohol and drug abuse prevention curriculums are presented to the youth. In addition to alcohol and drug abuse prevention, the goals include preventing teen pregnancy and school failure.
Evidence-based substance abuse prevention curriculums are also presented at local public and private junior high and high schools. Family Development works cooperatively with other organizations to promote a drug-free community.
